Canada's economy,
like those of other countries, is undergoing rapid change. A "New
Economy" is emerging based on new technology and global information
systems. Many traditional jobs are disappearing and new ones are being
created. Economics helps us understand the forces behind today's rapidly
changing economy, and the implications for the future. The study of
economics provides an opportunity to discuss and analyze real-world
issues such as unemployment, new technology, the global environment,
protection, and equality for women. Our economics department offers
both majors and honours programmes as well as a majors programme that
combines studies in economics and business. In addition to offering
courses in economic theory, the department's course offerings focus
on a broad range of contemporary issues in economics including women
in society, environmental economics and industrial relations.
