Major in English with a Concentration in Drama

St. Thomas University has a long-standing reputation for quality theatre productions and for giving students opportunities to learn about the performative aspects of literature, both in literature courses and in extra-curricular activities such as Theatre St. Thomas, STEEDS (St. Thomas Early English Drama Society), and other independent theatre productions. In addition, the university possesses the Black Box, one of the finest theatres in the province, and hosts the annual Provincial Drama Festival.

The Concentration in Drama is not aimed at enabling students to become theatre professionals, but to give students regular opportunities to be involved, either by being actively engaged in production or as audience, in the realization and enactment of literary texts.

While we believe that students who wish to concentrate in drama should have the opportunity to do so, we also believe that any student doing a major in English should take a variety of courses in other genres as well. For that reason, we require students following the Concentration in Drama to fulfill the usual requirements of an English major, which consist of 36 ch of courses. The Concentration in Drama would, depending on students' choice of courses, require more.

English 1006
English 2006
6ch in the pre-1800 dramatic literature*
6ch in courses from the Authors and Authorship category
3ch in courses from the Genres category, in a genre other than drama
3ch in courses from the National or Regional category
3ch in courses from the Cultural Studies category

As each course the Department offers fulfills up to two category requirements, it is possible for students to fulfill two requirements with one course. Therefore, the 21ch of category requirements does not necessarily imply 21ch of courses.

Students who wish to follow the Concentration in Drama would add the following requirements*.

English 2216 Drama Production
English 2523 Study of Drama
English 3216 Advanced Drama Production
English 3583 Modern Drama 1
English 3593 Modern Drama 2
An additional 3ch in courses in dramatic literature (see list below)
English 4213 Seminar in Performance and Production
An additional 3ch in courses in dramatic literature (see list below)

*Students who entered the third year of their degree in September 2004 or before may follow the old requirements.
