Guidelines for Honours Theses

Approved June 26, 2000

1. Students are advised to consult with potential thesis supervisors in the English department at the end of the student’s third year, so that some reading can be done over the summer.

2. A proposal must be submitted by September 30th of the student’s fourth year. The proposal should present a tentative thesis and outline the project (2-3 pages) and include a preliminary bibliography.

3. The proposal and selection of a second reader will be reviewed by the supervising professor and the department within one week of submission. Proposals may be approved, tentatively approved subject to revision, or rejected.

4. If the proposal is approved, the student will meet with the supervising professor to establish a meeting schedule.

5. The first complete draft of the entire thesis is due by February 15th. Theses should normally be between 12,500 and 15,000 words (50 and 60 pages), typed, double-spaced, and formatted according to the MLA style manual.

6. Final submission of two copies of the thesis must be by March 31st.

7. An oral examination will be conducted by the thesis supervisor and one other faculty member. The grade will be based on both the thesis and the examination. Oral examinations will be advertised in advance and anyone may attend.

Addendum

Approved June 2003

In exceptional circumstances only, the department may agree to accept a student into the Honours programme at the beginning of the student’s fourth year of study. The student would be required to take one Honours seminar and enrol in English 4996, Honours Thesis. A student may follow this path only if a permanent member of the department agrees to supervise the thesis. A list of eligible faculty may be obtained from the department Chair.
