1006I: Introduction to Literature
Overview This course is a survey of writers from ancient to modern times. We will examine poems, plays, dramas, short stories, and novels from all major periods. Students will be expected to read all assigned materials prior to attending class, and be prepared to discuss the material in depth in a question and answer format. In the first term, we will spend a fair amount of time considering poetry and prose from the 16th through 18th Centuries, with particular emphasis on Elizabethan, Romantic, and Victorian poetry, as well as a variety of essays and prose. In the latter half of the first term we will tackle Shakespeare's Henry IV Part I. The second term will be devoted to more modern writing, with a survey of the work of many major writers, including Eliot, Pound, Hemingway, Orwell, and a variety of others. We will also consider Fitzgerald's minor masterpiece, the short novel The Great Gatsby. Attendance Attendance is mandatory, and will be taken on a regular basis. Students with 6 or more unexcused absences will receive a grade of "F". Evaluation 1st term minor
paper: 10% (due October 7th) All papers are required, and a passing grade will not be awarded to any student who fails to submit all required work. Papers are due on the date indicated, and late work will be awarded an "F". Rewrites, unless indicated as being required by the instructor, will not be considered. Required Texts Beaty, et al. The
Norton Introduction to Literature, Shorter Eighth Edition Additional material will be handed out during class time as needed and will be considered a part of the material for which students are responsible.
