Guidelines
for Honours Theses
1. Cover Page
and table of contents. The cover page should include: the university
and department names, your name, your student ID number, the date when
the thesis was submitted, and the title. The table of contents should
indicate chapters and their constituent parts with corresponding page
numbers.
2.Normally the
first chapter will contain a statement of the research problem and a
review of the relevant literature in which you establish the scholarly
context of your own. You should thus provide a description of the problem,
why the problem is important, what its larger implications for political
science are, and what are your research objectives.
3.The first chapter
should therefore answer the following questions:
What are we going
to learn as a result of your thesis project that we do not know now?-
Why is it worth knowing?- How will we know that the conclusions are
valid?
4.The literature
review, which will include an up to date discussion of the scholarly
debate on the topic, should summarize the current state of knowledge
in the subject area of your research. This study should be comprehensive,
yet discriminating. That is, your review should focus on the key and
most recent scholarly books and articles in the area.
5.Your advisor
should be updated weekly (by email) on your progress towards meeting
your timetable.
6. Important Dates:
- The first complete draft of the thesis is due
no later than January 19th
- The penultimate
draft of the thesis is due no later than the last scheduled class
day.
