Policy Statement

Policy Name: Winter Storm Closure

University Closure

The University, in order to meet its commitments to its students, employees and the public, shall remain open and in operation unless exceptional circumstances exist.

The President, in consultation with appropriate officials at UNB, makes the decision about whether or not to close the University. Announcements regarding a closure are made to the appropriate media outlets by 6:45 a.m. or as soon as possible thereafter in the event of an overnight winter storm. In the event that the University is closed after the beginning of the working day, the department of human resources will notify unit managers and academic departments. The office of university advancement will notify the appropriate media outlets.

In the event of an overnight winter storm, staff are instructed to listen to the local radio stations to determine whether or not the University is closed. If the University is closed, members of the administration and support staff are not required to report for work. An announcement regarding the cancellation of all classes is the same as a University closure.

If UNB and STU are both closed due to inclement weather, joint announcements will be made by the Director of Public Relations at UNB. If STU makes an independent decision to close, announcements will be made by the Director of University Advancement.

In the event of a closure, Aramark employees are available to provide essential services.

This policy is consistent with the University of New Brunswick's storm closure policy.

Inclement Weather

When storm conditions exist, but the University remains open, staff are expected to report to work, however, staff who cannot report for work because of weather conditions must contact their direct supervisor and the human resources office. In the event that a storm develops after employees have reported for work, unit managers may allow individuals who are in particularly difficult circumstances to leave early. Normally difficult circumstances would refer to the additional travel required by an employee residing outside of the city limits of Fredericton. In these instances, staff may be asked to make up any missed time.

Faculty should consult the class cancellation policy for information on cancelling classes.

Authorization

In the absence of the President, the Vice-President (Academic) is responsible for making the decision on University closure.
