Scholarships-in-Course

Scholarships-in-course are open to returning students who have demonstrated academic excellence in their course of studies. Candidates should submit the following to the Awards Officer: a completed scholarship application form, a letter of academic reference, and a brief overview of educational background, academic awards and accomplishments.

The following is the list of scholarships-in-course tenable at St. Thomas:

ATV Media Scholarship
Value: $6000. The scholarship is to be awarded to a student entering the third year of the Journalism Programme who is a member of a designated group as defined in the Canada Employment Equity Act with preference given to a student who is a member of a visible minority or the aboriginal peoples, who demonstrates an interest in television journalism. If a candidate from one of the designated groups is not available, the University reserves the right to identify other deserving candidates. Donor: ATV/CTV Television. Bernard and Louis Bloomfield Scholarship
Value: $200 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Suzie Breau Memorial Scholarship
Valued at $500 per annum, the scholarship is open to a third-year student who plans to make a career of caring for the aged and is enrolling in courses in Gerontology. The award, established by the family of the late Suzie Breau, Class of 1991, honours her memory. Applicants are invited to write a letter of application to Mrs. Breau outlining their plans and aspirations in respect to the study of Gerontology. Richard Dean Brown Memorial Scholarship
Value: $700 per annum. Open to undergraduate students who demonstrate academic merit and an interest in the study of human rights. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University. (Note: The recipient of this scholarship will be selected by the Awards Officer in consultation with the Director of the Atlantic Human Rights Centre.)

J.E.P. Butler Scholarship
Value: $300 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Rev. Edmund Casey Scholarship
Value: $100. Awarded annually to a resident of Harrington Hall registered at St. Thomas University. Selection criteria will be scholastic achievement and contribution to the quality of life in residence. Donor: Harrington Hall House Committee. Apply: Harrington Hall House Committee.

Rev. Edmund J. Casey Memorial Scholarship
Value: minimum $1000 per annum. The Faculty Fund Committee, on behalf of the Faculty members contributing to the Fund, awards this scholarship. It is given to a returning student who has demonstrated not only academic distinction (a gpa above 3.5), but also high character and leadership within the St. Thomas community. Information concerning this award is posted in the fall semester. Apply: Chair, Faculty Fund Committee.

Louis Chabot Scholarship
Valued at $1500 per annum and renewable, this scholarship honours the memory of Louis Chabot, a former Dean’s List student and member of the varsity hockey team who died unexpectedly in March 1990, and is offered annually to returning students who have participated in intercollegiate hockey and who have maintained a minimum average of B– during their last session as a full time student. Commcorp Financial Services Inc. Scholarship
Value: $250 per annum. Open to any undergraduate student who shows academic promise and who is in need of financial assistance. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Senator John J. Connolly Scholarship
Value: $200. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Honoria Conway Scholarship Fund
For lay women involved in ministry, a number of scholarships are available. For information about eligibility and application write: Scholarship Committee, Sisters of Charity of the I.C., Box Z66, Saint John, N.B., E2L 3V1.

Monsignor W.J. Conway Scholarship
Value: $200 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement. Preference to a Madawaska County student. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Dr. Richard W. Costello Scholarship
Value: Minimum $1000. One scholarship awarded annually, on the basis of academic achievement and financial need, to an anthropology student entering the fourth year of study. Donor: the estate of Dr. Richard Costello. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Senator David A. Croll Scholarship
Value: $500 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually to a student enrolled in the social sciences or social work. Among the selection criteria are: academic excellence, financial need, qualities of leadership. Donor: Senator David A. Croll, Ottawa, Ontario. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Cornelius E. and Annie Crowley Memorial Scholarship
Value: $2500 minimum. One scholarship to be awarded annually to a third or fourth-year student honoring or majoring in religious studies. Selection criteria will include financial need as well as academic achievement. Donor: The late Elizabeth Ann Crowley in memory of her parents. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Professor Ted Daigle Memorial Scholarships
Value: $500-$1000. Awarded annually in memory of Professor Ted Daigle who taught at St. Thomas University from 1966 until his death in 1983. The scholarships are open to students pursuing studies in French (Second Language) and/or Drama. Scholastic achievement and need are included in the selection criteria. Apply: Chair, Faculty Fund Committee.

Rev. Thomas J. Daley Memorial Scholarship
Awarded annually by the St. Thomas University Alumni Association in honour of the late Thomas J. Daley, BA ’59 and director of alumni from 1982 to 1987. Value varies with investment earnings. Awarded during semester two to a St. Thomas University student who is actively involved in campus ministry and who demonstrates academic achievement. Selection criteria include musical ability, academic performance and financial need. Apply: Alumni Affairs Officer, St. Thomas University.

Datatel Scholars Foundation Scholarships
Value: $700 per annum. Open to full-time and part-time (six hours minimum) students. Funded by the Datatel Scholars Foundation. Apply for further information and forms by January 15, to the Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Juergen Doerr History Scholarship
Value: $1000. One scholarship awarded annually to a second, third, or fourth year student majoring in History. The recipient must have maintained an annual grade point average of 3.3 or higher. Selection will be based on academic achievement and financial need. Donor: Uta Doerr. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Dr. D. Leo Dolan Scholarship
Value: $200. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

M. Monica Donoghue Scholarship
Value: $400 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement and financial need. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Alice Doyle Memorial Scholarship
Value: approximately $500. One scholarship to be awarded annually. Open to a mature student enrolled in second, third, or fourth year. The principal criteria are initiative and need. Donor: the family of Mrs. Alice Doyle. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Monsignor Donald C. Duffie Scholarship
Value: $500 awarded annually. This award is open to applicants who belong to the university band, The Thomists. Selection is made on the basis of satisfactory academic performance and leadership in band activities. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Monsignor Donald C. Duffie Memorial Scholarships
Value: $1000 - $1500. Awarded annually to returning students in memory of Monsignor Donald C. Duffie, president of the University, 1961-75. Among the selection criteria are: character, academic achievement, and contribution to student life. These scholarships are supported by the Duffie Endowment Fund, established, May 1989. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Duffie Scholarships: Part-Time Students
Value: $150-$300. A number of scholarships, named in honour of Monsignor Donald C. Duffie, former president of the University. Eligibility: part-time students who have completed a minimum of three full courses, or equivalent. Selection will be made on the basis of academic achievement, with attention given to financial need. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Leo Francis and Millicent Ferrari Memorial Scholarship
Value: $500. One scholarship to be awarded annually to a mature student, in third or fourth year, who is honouring or majoring in Philosophy. Financial need as well as academic achievement will be a criterion. Donor: Dr. Leo Charles Ferrari. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Grogan-Pace Scholarship
Value: $500 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually. Selection criteria include academic achievement and financial need. Preference will be given to prospective candidates for the priesthood. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Rev. George J. Harrington Scholarship
Value: $600 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

The Gene Hayes Scholarship
Purpose: The Gene Hayes Scholarship Fund provides approximately $4000 per year support to students with disabilities who require funding to meet a unique learning need which is a result of their disability.
Eligibility: All applicants for the Gene Hayes Scholarship must have a sound academic record. Students with a disability who require support services (e.g. text readers or note takers) or, specialized materials and equipment to provide greater learning accessibility are encouraged to apply. Standard educational costs (e.g. tuition or textbooks) and regular living expenses (e.g. rent or food) are not eligible for support.
Amount of Award: The Gene Hayes Scholarship Fund seeks to provide funding to cover the cost of the additional services, materials or equipment required by the student to meet his or her unique learning needs. Normally, a recipient of the Gene Hayes Scholarship will not receive more than $1000 in any given academic year.
Application Procedures: Applicants must complete “The Gene Hayes Scholarship Application Form” and submit it to: Director of Student Affairs, St. Thomas University, Fredericton, New Brunswick, E3B 5G3.The deadline for receipt of applications is September 1, however, applications will be accepted through the academic year provided that there are monies available in the scholarship fund.

Holy Cross Fathers Scholarship in Catholic Studies
Value: $1000. Awarded annually. This scholarship honours the religious members of the Congregation of Holy Cross appointed to St. Thomas in various capacities since 1964. Open to students in third and fourth year who are majoring in Catholic Studies. Selection criteria: academic achievement with an annual gpa of 3.0 or higher and financial need. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

St. Thomas Intercollegiate Athletics Awards
Value varies to a maximum of full-tuition and compulsory fees. These awards are offered to full-time students who have completed two successful semesters and are involved in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) athletics. Student athletes must have maintained satisfactory grades during their last session as a full-time student. Awarded by the Awards Officer after nominations from the Athletic Department.

Dick and Judy Kennedy Scholarship in English
Value: $500 per annum. One scholarship to be awarded annually to a student entering third or fourth year with a major or honours in English. Selection will be based on academic achievement and financial need. Donors: Dick and Judy Kennedy. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Knights of Columbus Scholarship
Value: $500 per annum. One scholarship per annum open to students from any diocese of the Province of New Brunswick who are registered full-time at the University. Selection criteria include academic achievement, financial need and potential for contributing to the mission of St. Thomas University. Donor: Knights of Columbus, NB State Council, St. Thomas University Trust. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Bishop A.B. Leverman Scholarship
Value: $600 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Monsignor F.M. Lockary Scholarship
Value: $300 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Dr. Abdul Qaiyum Lodhi Scholarship
Value: $500 per annum. The scholarship honours the memory of Dr. Abdul Q. Lodhi, a professor of Sociology at St. Thomas University, 1984-91, the founder and first director of the Certificate Programme in Criminology and Social Justice. The scholarship is open to students registered in the Criminology and Social Justice Programme. Selection criteria include scholastic achievement and financial need. John G. MacDonald Memorial Scholarship
Value: $1000. Open scholarship established to honor the memory of John G. MacDonald, a former student from Bay du Vin, N.B. Among the criteria to be considered are: scholastic achievement and financial need. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Thomas Stephen McCann Memorial Scholarship
Value: $200. Open scholarship. Awarded annually. Selection is made on the basis of scholarship, character, actual or potential contribution to the university community. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

McElroy Memorial Scholarship
Value: $500 per annum. Open to any undergraduate student with high academic standing, who is in need of financial assistance. Donor: the Estate of Mary Ann McElroy. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Rev. A.L. McFadden Scholarships
Value varies with yearly earnings from the Father A.L. McFadden Scholarship Fund initiated by former students of Father McFadden, June 22, 1981. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Mrs. P.M. McMahon Scholarship
Value: $500 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement. Open scholarship. Moncton student preferred. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Senator Donald A. McLean Memorial Scholarship
Value: $1000 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually. Selection is based on scholastic achievement and financial need. Preference will be given to returning full-time students who have graduated from New Brunswick high schools. Donated by the late Catherine Mary McLean in memory of her late husband, Senator Donald A. McLean, LLD (STU 1972). Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Dr. Marguerite Michaud Scholarship
Value: $300 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually on the basis of academic achievement. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Bertha L. Miller Memorial Scholarship
Value: $500 per annum. Open to graduating students who demonstrate academic merit and who have been accepted to postgraduate studies. First consideration will be granted to students who intend to pursue postgraduate studies in Library Science. Apply by May 1: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Brian Mulroney Scholarship in Public Policy and Journalism
Value: $5000(USD) per annum. One scholarship open to students entering third year of the BA programme, major in journalism. Applicants must meet the following criteria: minimum annual gpa of 3.7 on a minimum of 30 credit hours, three letters of reference and a writing portfolio that demonstrates an interest and aptitude for public policy journalism. Renewable for an additional year with a minimum gpa of 3.7 on a minimum of 30 credit hours. Donor: Freedom Forum International Inc. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Charles J. O’Neill Scholarship
Value: $400 per annum. Open to a student who has in view the priesthood. Preference will be given to an applicant from the Moncton Archdiocese. Apply: Awards Officer, St. Thomas University.

Dennis “Ollie” Oakley Music Scholarship
Value: to be determined, minimum $200. Open to students with competence in a musical instrument and good academic standing. Acceptance to membership in The Thomists is a contribution of eligibility. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Outstanding Scholar Award
Value: $1000 per annum. One hundred scholarships-in-course. Open to returning full-time students who have demonstrated academic excellence in their course of studies. Students eligible for the competition for this limited number of scholarships will be considered under the following criteria:
1) In the year of application: (a) the student’s annual grade point average (gpa) will be based on all courses taken in the academic year (September - April) with a minimum of 30 credit hours; (b) to be eligible students must have a minimum annual gpa of 3.5; (c) awards will be made to students on a competitive basis, based on the highest annual gpa; (d) in cases where the annual gpa’s are equal, the cumulative gpa will be used as a deciding factor;
2) In the year in which the scholarship is held: (a) the students will be enrolled full-time for the academic year; (b) the students will hold no other major university award; (c) the students are in an undergraduate degree programme, pursuing their first degree; (d) within the 100 awards, there are 7 scholarships reserved only for continuing students who are enrolled full-time in their second undergraduate degree programme (e.g. BEd, BSW).

Dr. Desmond Pacey French Scholarship
Value: $250. One scholarship to be awarded annually to a full-time university student entering the first level of the French Immersion programme. Financial need as well as academic achievement will be taken into consideration. Donor: Mrs. Mary Pacey. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Dr. Desmond Pacey Memorial Scholarship
Value: $300. One scholarship to be awarded annually to a major or honours student in English literature entering third or fourth year. Financial need as well as academic achievement will be a criterion. Donor: Mrs. Mary Pacey. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Priests’ Scholarship Fund
Maximum value: $1000. Awarded annually to qualified students of the Diocese of Saint John who have in view the priesthood in that diocese. Apply: The Chancellor, Diocese of Saint John, One Bayard Drive, Saint John N.B., E2L 3L5.

Royal Insurance Company of Canada Scholarship
Value: $1000. Awarded annually. Open to a third year full-time student of Aboriginal descent, who does not hold another academic award. Based on academic standing over the last 60 credit hours, with a minimum gpa of 3.0. Application should include a letter indicating future academic plans and two letters of academic reference. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Ben Scholten Scholarship
Value: $500. One scholarship to be awarded annually to a full-time student entering fourth year who plans to pursue studies in the area of theology or pastoral ministry with the goal of doing lay ordained ministry in the Roman Catholic Church. Financial need as well as academic achievement will be taken into account. Donor: Mr. Ben Scholten and Family. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Scoudouc River University Awards
Value: Minimum $1000; maximum $4500. Awarded annually but may be renewed upon renomination at the pleasure of the awarding committee. These awards are intended for full-time students and are open to St. Thomas students.

Awards are open to those who have “signal promise” but are especially needy or handicapped in any way; or to those with unusual direction or promise, or to those of distinct interest not qualified for other regularly established scholarships and awards selectively or competitively available. Nominees must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate programme. At the time of nomination the nominee must be domiciled in the province of New Brunswick. Candidates taking up a Scoudouc River University Award may not hold, during the tenure of that award, other major financial awards. Donor: The late Dr. William L. Webster. St. Michael’s Parish Scholarship
Value varies with yearly earnings of investments. Open scholarship. Awarded annually from earnings of St. Michael’s Parish scholarship fund, established 1959. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Rabbi David Spiro Scholarship
Value: $250 per annum. One scholarship awarded annually to an undergraduate student who shows academic promise and who is in need of financial assistance. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

Student Representative Council Scholarship
Value: $100 per annum. Tenable for one year. Open to full-time St. Thomas students of high academic standing who have contributed to the betterment of the St. Thomas University community. Judge J. Thomas Troy Memorial Scholarship
Value: $2500 beginning 1999-2000. One scholarship is to be awarded annually on the basis of academic record or financial need. Apply: Registrar's Office, St. Thomas University.

University Women’s Club Scholarship
One scholarship valued at $500. Tenable for one year. Condition: the recipient must be a female student in her final year and have graduated from a high school in Saint John or King’s County, N.B. Selection is made on the basis of academic standing and financial need. Apply by March 31 to: Mrs. Anne Turner, Scholarship Committee Chairman, 981 Seawood Lane, Saint John, N.B., E2M 3G8.

UPS Canada Ltd. Bursary
Value: $500. One bursary to be awarded annually to a full-time student enrolled in third or fourth year of an undergraduate programme. Selection will be based on academic achievement (minimum annual gpa of 3.0 on a minimum of 30 credit hours), financial need and demonstrated involvement in the university and/or local community. Rev. Richard O’Brien Waugh, C.S.C., Scholarship
Value: Variable ($1000 maximum). Awarded annually. This scholarship honors the memory of Father Waugh of the Holy Cross Fathers who taught Philosophy at St. Thomas from 1964-1986. Open to all students, except those in first year, enrolled in Arts and Social Work. Selection criteria are based on academic achievement and financial need.
