St. Thomas awards rank of professor emeritus
[ Fredericton ] -- St. Thomas University will award the rank of Professor
Emeritus to Dr. Anthony L.H. Rhinelander at its spring 2002 Convocation
ceremony on May 13, 2002. This award is given to faculty members who
have served with distinction in teaching, research and publication
or in the administration or development of the University.
For three decades, Dr. Rhinelander's colleagues and students have
benefited from his exceptional skill as a lecturer, scholar and contributor
to the development of St. Thomas University. He has been an accomplished
scholar, presenting papers, participating in panels, and attending
conferences in Canada, the United States and in Russia. He published
a book on nineteenth century Russian imperialism and translated a
classic history of Russia.
His teaching style was engaging and imaginative. His lively impersonation
of historical figures such as Ivan the Terrible and Erasmus have drawn
crowds of appreciative students. Bystanders have been astonished to
see Dr. Rhinelander, in Cossack garb or in flowing robes, striding
across the campus, making the study of history a memorable experience
for his students.
Dr. Rhinelander also devoted considerable time and energy to university
and community activities. He contributed to dozens of university committees,
delivered public lectures, and was president of the Fredericton Heritage
Trust.
The Convocation ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday May 13,
2002 in the courtyard of St. Thomas University on the north side of
George Martin Hall.
