Guest lecturer to visit Fredericton during Feast Day of St. Thomas
Aquinas
[ Fredericton ] - St. Thomas University has invited a special guest
lecturer to speak during the University's annual Feast Day of St.
Thomas Aquinas.
Mary Catherine Sommers, of the University of St. Thomas in Houston,
Texas, will be presenting "GET A LIFE! Form and Confusion in
Contemporary Society."
"The phrase 'Get a life!', spoken repeatedly by my children
in various contexts, used to puzzle me," Dr. Sommers said. "Presumably
'life' is the one thing we don't have to acquire, whatever else we
may lack. Nevertheless, 'unpacking' the meaning of this expression
allows us to draw some interesting conclusions about contemporary
society and to make connections with medieval culture, where getting
or choosing a 'life' was a serious subject for artists, poets and
philosophers, including Thomas Aquinas."
Dr. Sommers is a professor at the Center for Thomistic Studies in
Houston. She has published extensively on the works and life of St.
Thomas Aquinas. She is currently researching for a book entitled Taking
Martha's Part: Thomas Aquinas and the Perfect Life. It includes analyses
of perfections and religion in specific works of St. Thomas.
Dr. Sommers' lecture will be held Monday, January 28, at 4 p.m. in
Edmund Casey Hall's Ted Daigle Auditorium. Members of the public are
welcome to attend.
Aquinas Day will also include complimentary snacks for the students,
a liturgy and Eucharist celebration, the grand opening of the Professional
Studies Building, and the STU Revue (a classic talent show).
