For Immediate Release: July 8, 2002 NotaBle Acts Summer Theatre Festival A new event has been added to Fredericton's summer festival schedule. The first annual NotaBle Acts Summer Theatre Festival will take place from 1st-4th August in the Black Box Theatre at St Thomas University and at various locations in downtown Fredericton. The festival was founded by Len Falkenstein, Director of Drama at
UNB, Ilkay Silk, Drama Coordinator at STU, and Colleen Wagner, a playwright
and professor at York University who makes her summer home in Fredericton.
The recipient of funding and support from the City of Fredericton,
UNB, and STU, the Festival's mandate is to promote New Brunswick playwrights, This is the first summer theatre festival ever to be held in the capital city. Festival organizer Sue Fisher says that "We want to create a
forum in which innovative and exciting theatre can take place and
to provide artists with a venue to showcase their work. We also want
to give young New Brunswickers the chance to gain experience by working
with theatre This year's programme celebrates the very best of NB theatre and talent. Eight new plays will be produced over the four day event, three full-length
works as part of a Mainstage Series to be held at the Black Box Theatre
and five short plays that will performed as part of the free downtown
"Street Theatre" portion of the Festival. The Mainstage
Series will kick off on Thursday, August 1 with Ilkay Silk's production
of Don Hannah's Fathers The five scripts to be featured in the Street Theatre portion of the Festival were submitted for a province-wide playwrighting competition and will showcase the work of young, emerging playwrights and actors.
