Honourary Degree Recipients St. Thomas University will grant honorary degrees to three distinguished Canadians, Sally Armstrong, Professor Jock Murray, M.D. and Gertrude Duffie at its 2004 convocation ceremony on May 10, 2004.
Her eye-witness reports have earned her awards including the Gold Award from the National Magazine Awards Foundation and the Author's Award from the Foundation for the Advancement of Canadian Letters. She received the Amnesty International Media Award in 2000 and again in 2002. In 1998 she was made a Member of the Order of Canada. In 2002, her book, Veiled Threat: The Hidden Power of the Women of Afghanistan was published by Penguin Books. She and her husband Ross Armstrong (now deceased) have two daughters and one son.
Dr. Murray has more than 200 medical publications including a textbook
of neurology in its 4th edition, 35 text book chapters and numerous
books, including one for newly-diagnosed MS patients. He also co-authored,
with his wife Janet, a biography of the 19th century physician-politician,
Sir Charles Tupper, and co-authored a reference book on the history
of medicine
In 1983, Mrs. Duffie was commissioned to research and prepare drawings
on the history of Fredericton which were woven into 24 colorful tapestries
by Dr. Ivan Crowell. The tapestries are permanently on display at
Fredericton City Hall. In 1986, she received the City of Fredericton
Distinguished Citizens Award. Mrs. Duffie has donated her time and
her artwork to many Ms. Sally Armstrong will deliver the Convocation address and Mr. Mike Morrison will present the Valedictory address. The Convocation ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the courtyard of St. Thomas University on the north side of George Martin Hall. Media contact: Mary McIntosh |

Human
rights activist, documentary filmmaker and award-winning author Sally
Armstrong is currently the editor-at-large of Chatelaine magazine
and a contributing editor at Maclean's magazine. She was editor-in-chief
of Homemaker's magazine from 1988 to 1999. Ms. Armstrong has covered
stories about women and girls in zones of conflict all over the world,
from Bosnia
Professor
T.J. (Jock) Murray, M.D. is a former Dean of Medicine at Dalhousie
University and recently retired as a Professor of Medical Humanities.
He currently holds a post-retirement position as Professor of Medicine
(Neurology) and continues his clinical work and research on multiple
sclerosis. Dr. Murray has held 81 funded research grants.
Gertrude
Duffie is a respected New Brunswick painter whose work is included
in the NB Provincial Art Bank and in many private collections across
Canada. Mrs. Duffie was born in Chatham, NB and studied at St. Mary's
Academy, Teachers College and the University of Vermont. She received
her art education at the University of Ottawa, Holland College, and
through extension courses at the University of New Brunswick. She
also studied under Molly Lamb Bobak and Fred Ross.
