Fredericton – Noted Canadian journalists and media experts will lead the professional development workshops that coincide with the 2004 Atlantic Journalism Awards to be held in Fredericton on Saturday, April 30th.

St. Thomas University’s Journalism Programme Director Philip Lee has announced that the workshops, to be held at Brian Mulroney Hall, will include the following sessions:

  • 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. - PR, Journalism and the Search for the Truth by Ira Basen. Ira Basen has been with CBC Radio since 1984 and has been a senior producer and involved in the creation of several network programs and special series. He has taught at the University of Toronto and Ryerson, and his book on public relations and the media will be published in 2006.
  • 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. - What Can I Say? Freedom of Expression and the Tyranny of Balance - Journalism and the Law by Daniel Henry. Daniel Henry is a senior legal counsel for CBC and regularly advises radio and television producers and reporters. He has reviewed thousands of stories before broadcast, directed the defence of stories that have been legally challenged, and revised CBC’s journalistic standards and practices from a legal perspective.
  • 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. - Getting the Story: Time and Space are Not the Keys to Story Telling. Come and Find Out Which Keys Open the Lock by Sally Armstrong. Sally Armstrong is an Amnesty International award winner, a member of the Order of Canada, documentary filmmaker, teacher, author, human rights activist and contributing editor at Maclean’s magazine. She has covered stories in zones of conflict all over the world.

The cost for all three workshops is $50.00 and $25.00 for students. As well, a tour of the CBC/St. Thomas University facility will take place before the workshops. To register, please e-mail office@AJAs.ca or call (902) 425-2727.
