St. Thomas University Summer Convocation

Gaynell Cloney-BowlenFredericton – St. Thomas University will award degrees to 140 students and confer Honorary Fellows on two Fredericton residents, Gaynell Cloney-Bowlen and Bonita Grant, at its Summer Convocation on Wednesday, July 20, 2005.

St. Thomas University awards Honorary Fellows for individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the disciplines of social work and education.

A social worker and community activist, Gaynell Cloney-Bowlen has developed and delivered counselling services for single parent families, First Nations families, people living in poverty and victims of crime. For more than fifteen years, she was the Victims Witness Services Co-ordinator for the Fredericton City Police Department.

Bonita GrantAs a principal, vice-principal and teacher at numerous Fredericton-area schools, Bonita Grant was well regarded by peers and students. She delivered numerous professional development workshops on classroom management and effective teaching, and was also a sessional lecturer for Mount Allison University and the University of New Brunswick.

The Convocation Address will be delivered by Mr. Bernard Richard, Ombudsman of the Province of New Brunswick. Prior to his legal career, Mr. Richard was a social worker and later, while an elected representative, he was Minister of Education and Minister Responsible for Social Policy Renewal.

The Convocation will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the courtyard of St. Thomas University.
