June 3, 2005 Province of New Brunswick Announces Financial
Support Fredericton – The Province of New Brunswick has committed $3.3 million towards the new McCain Hall at St. Thomas University. The announcement was made at the university today by Premier Bernard Lord and Education Minister Madeline Dubé. With the provincial commitment, St. Thomas has reached 62 percent of its $8.3 million fundraising objective. “This financial commitment from the Province of New Brunswick flows directly to students and the quality of education they receive at St. Thomas University,” said St. Thomas University President and Vice Chancellor Dr. Daniel O’Brien. “We already have a nationally-recognized, student-centered academic environment with small classes, core disciplines and innovative programmes. McCain Hall will house more classrooms, more student study areas and more project rooms. The quality of our education environment will go from an “A” to an “A+”.” The need for a new academic building reflects growth in enrolment and continued emphasis on the learning environment. The 43,000 square foot building will have additional classrooms, a student study hall, research and project rooms, and faculty offices. Earlier this year, St. Thomas named its new academic building Margaret Norrie McCain Hall in recognition of Mrs. McCain’s outstanding public service and life-long focus on education issues. Last month, political, business and community leaders from across Canada formed a committee to guide fundraising. Project tenders will be issued later this month and construction is expected to begin during the summer pending final project approval by the Board of Governors. McCain Hall will be available for students in September 2006. Media Contact – Jeffrey Carleton, St. Thomas
