St. Thomas University Student To Participate
in WUSC International Seminar
Fredericton – St. Thomas University student
and Fredericton resident Jerri Anne Mackenzie will participate in
the 58th WUSC International Seminar, an intensive six-week study tour
in Burkina Faso.
Selected for her commitment to international development and extra-curricular
leadership, Mackenzie is one of 20 young Canadians drawn from universities
across Canada who will take part in this unique learning experience.
A third-year Bachelor of Arts student, she is interested in studying
young women’s self esteem and HIV/AIDS acquisition issues.
“I hope this international seminar will provide me with hands-on
knowledge to raise awareness about the more than 25 million people
infected with HIV and AIDS in Africa,” said Mackenzie.
While in Burkina Faso, Mackenzie will be paired with a Burkinabe
student and will take part in a group research project on HIV/AIDS,
agriculture, and gender equality as well as a placement with a local
development project. Following the study tour, she intends to raise
awareness about international cooperation within the university and
Fredericton communities.
Created in 1948 by World University Service of Canada (WUSC), the
International Seminar includes many accomplished Canadians among its
past participants including two Supreme Court justices, the Governor
of the Bank of Canada, and several federal cabinet ministers.
The 2005 International Seminar is presented by Uniterra, a joint
initiative of WUSC and the Canadian Centre for International Studies
and Cooperation (CECI).
