St. Thomas University Hosts Mazda CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championships

Fredericton (March 7, 2005) – For the first time in its history, St. Thomas University will host a National Championship as eight teams from across Canada arrive Tuesday for the Mazda Canadian Colleges Athletics Association Men’s National Volleyball Championship.

The national tournament will see more than 150 people, including teams, coaches, trainers, officials and CCAA representatives, in Fredericton from March 9th-12th. Festivities begin on Wednesday, March 9th with the CCAA All-Canadian Awards Banquet at the Fredericton Inn. Competition begins Thursday, March 10th and continues to Saturday, March 12th at the UNB Main Gym. The finals will begin Saturday evening with the bronze medal game at 5:30 pm and the gold medal game to follow at 8:00 pm.

“After feeling the success of hosting two Atlantic Volleyball Championships, we are very excited about the challenge of hosting a National Volleyball Championship. The committee has worked hard to ensure it will be a great student athlete experience,” said St. Thomas University Athletic Director Derryl Smith.

The host St. Thomas Tommies will play their first match of the tournament at 6:00 pm, Thursday, Match 10th against Red Deer College. The STU Alumni Association will be hosting a reception for alumni and friends at the upper level (Dance Studio) at the UNB Main Gym from 5:00-8:00 pm to cheer on the St. Thomas team.

Teams competing in the national championship include:

  • Capilano College Blues (North Vancouver, British Columbia)
  • University College of the Cariboo (Kamloops, British Columbia)
  • Red Deer College (Red Deer, Alberta)
  • Grant MacEwan College (Edmonton, Alberta)
  • Humber College (Etobicoke, Ontario)
  • College de Sherbrooke (Sherbrooke, Quebec)
  • University of New Brunswick – Saint John (Saint John, New Brunswick)
  • St. Thomas University (Fredericton, New Brunswick)

The tournament website, which includes event information, schedules, results and standings, is available at www.stu.ca/volleyballnationals. Tickets are available for afternoon and evening double headers, as well as tournament passes for adults and students. Tournament passes may be purchased in advance at the St. Thomas Athletics Office in the O’Keefe Fitness Centre. Tickets for double-header action will be available at the door.
