Making the Move to Succeed
Adult learners have various reasons for wanting to attend university.
For some, it means resuming studies they interrupted years ago to start
a family or pursue a career. For others, it means doing something they've
been thinking about, but never found time to fit into their schedules.
Still others see university as a way of advancing their careers or enhancing
their professional qualifications.
Whatever your reasons for considering university, if you're a typical
adult learner, you may be wondering whether you'll be able to fit in,
do the work, and make the grade. Many adult learners tend to question
their ability to succeed. In most cases, their fears are unfounded.
Adult learners bring a lifetime of experience to their studies. Generally,
they're highly motivated. They know how to organize their time. Often
they have a whole range of skills that make them natural leaders. That's
one of the reasons we believe not only that St. Thomas is good for adult
learners, but also that adult learners are good for St. Thomas.
"My first day was exciting. I was nervous, but excited about
the class. I felt old, I was 36, and I was going to be surrounded by
19 and 20 year olds, but I felt very comfortable because everyone was
very nice and friendly.
"My biggest concern was do I know how to study? Do I know how
to work because I had 20 years between grade 12 and going back? I have
done really well. It's just totally different when you go back. I surprised
myself. I learned to organize my day because I had 2 kids and I was
working full time. With my busy schedule I could still find time to
study. When I sat down to study, it was for me. The excitement of learning
kept me going."
