A Scholarship Leader
The St. Thomas community
is committed to the ideal of academic excellence and our scholarship
programme is designed to attract and recognize exceptional scholars.
To this end, we offer a wide range of entrance awards to highly qualified
students admitted to St. Thomas on the basis of their high school records.
We also offer numerous scholarships-incourse to continuing students
who achieve academic distinction at St. Thomas.
St. Thomas is recognized
as Eastern Canada’s scholarship leader. We devote more of our
operating budget to scholarships and bursaries than any other university
in the region. We annually commit in excess of one-million dollars in
scholarships to entering students. In fact, one in every two of our
first-year students holds an entrance scholarship, and one in every
seven of these recipients holds a renewable award ranging in value from
$2,000 to $45,000 over four years. Many other entering students hold
non-renewable, annual scholarships valued from $250 to $3,500.
This exceptional scholarship
programme, combined with our strong student employment programme and
fees which are among the most attractive in Atlantic Canada, makes St.
Thomas the university of choice for many outstanding students.
Students who have taken
a minimum of 30 credit hours of courses are eligible for “scholarships-in-course.”
More than 75 scholarships-in-course, with values up to $6,000 per annum,
are also awarded annually to returning students who have demonstrated
academic excellence in their studies at St. Thomas.
Scholarship Eligibility
Our entrance award programme
is highly competitive and is open to scholars with superior academic
standing. Candidates admitted on the basis of their high school records
to full-time study on the St. Thomas campus in the first year of a fouryear
degree programme in arts are eligible to apply for entrance awards.
Normally, applicants with previous university experience are ineligible
for entrance scholarships.
| All
applicants with admissions averages of 80% or higher receive entrance
awards. For details on approved admissions electives and the calculation
of admissions averages, please consult the admission requirements
entry in our viewbook or our website www.stu.ca. |
International candidates
are eligible to apply for scholarships. If you are entering St. Thomas
under the adult learner admissions policy, please consult the academic
calendar for details on scholarships for adult learners.
Selection Criteria
In selecting entrance scholarship
recipients, the primary criterion is the academic record which is reviewed
in detail. The selection committee considers admission average, grade
12 programme (courses and level of difficulty), rank in graduating class,
and programme and performance in grade 11.
Other factors considered
include: letters of academic reference and scores on standardized tests
including provincial achievement examinations, SATs, etc.
In addition to the academic
selection criteria, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities
and financial need are considered in awarding some entrance scholarships.
Application Procedure
Scholarship candidates should
submit a completed scholarship application form. A letter of reference
which comments on your scholastic, co-curricular and extracurricular
accomplishments is optional. Scholarship application forms are available
from the St. Thomas admissions office or in high school guidance centres.
On the scholarship application
form students must provide information about their rank in their graduating
class, academic honours, other awards and accomplishments, extracurricular
and community activities, and any leadership positions held.
To be considered for awards
with other special selection criteria, students should also address
qualifications for these awards on the scholarship application form.
For example, financial need is a criterion for several major awards.
Candidates for these awards should provide details on their financial
status as indicated on the scholarship application form.
The
application deadline for renewable scholarships is March 1, 2005. |
Renewable
Scholarships 2005-2006
Following is a
list of St. Thomas renewable scholarships. In order to keep a renewable
scholarship, recipients must maintain an average ranging from B+ to
A- depending on the scholarship. This average is based on a minimum

programmes.

Tour St. Thomas
Choosing a university
is often a difficult decision and we have found that students who have
an opportunity to see St. Thomas for themselves are much happier with
their final choice.
If you think St.
Thomas could be part of your future, we hope you’ll take the time
to pay us a visit and get to know some of our students and professors.
Our admissions staff would be happy to arrange your tour of the campus.
Campus tours are normally conducted Monday to Friday, 8:30 am –
4:30 pm.
