Dawn MacDonald of Shad Bay, NS, earned the University’s 2001 Female Athlete of the Year award. Dawn captained the rugby team this year (earning MVP) and has been a league All-Star three consecutive years. Andrew Trites of the Pepsi Bottling Group presented Dawn with a leather jacket. |

Jason Sands won the 2001 Male Athlete of the Year award. The Kingston, ON, hockey player claimed CIAU All-Canadian honours and was assistant captain at the World University Games in Poland this year. The team captain’s overtime goal in the final game against St. FX captured the AUAA conference title. On behalf of the Pepsi Bottling Group, Andrew Trites gave Jason a leather jacket. |

Jeff Dewar of Rothesay, NB, accepts the John Frederick Walls Memorial Awards from President Daniel O’Brien. Jeff played hockey, competing at the nationals this year. The award is presented to a male upperclassman of good character who has actively participated in university athletics, maintained good academic standing and represented the athletic ideal. The award honours the memory of John Frederick Walls, a Chatham, NB, native who attended St. Thomas from 1970 to 1974. He was killed in the summer of 1974 shortly after his graduation. |
