A Clearer Focus: A Consideration of What is meant by "mental health"? What impact does aging have on mental health? How do mental health problems in old age differ from those experienced earlier in the lifespan? This panel discussion will examine these questions, while challenging some common assumptions about what it means to be mentally healthy as an older adult. Some topics to be discussed will include the experience of being depressed and strategies for overcoming mental distress and suffering. Also to be explored will be the impact that life experiences and living conditions can have on a person's mental health as they age. The panel participants will be: Linda Caissie, Asst. Professor, Gerontology; STU, Janet Stoppard, recently retired Professor of Psychology, UNB; and John Harvey, a Psychologist who works in Fredericton in Public Mental Health. Please register

General Meeting We invite you to attend the Third Age Centre Annual General Meeting. The annual meeting is an ideal time to pass along your ideas about the operation of and programming at the Third Age Centre. Come to hear reports of TAC’s activities, elect the new Board, and discuss plans for the 2009-2010 program year. An entertaining and informative speaker, Leslie Cockburn, Young Adult and Adult Services Coordinator at the Fredericton Public Library, will discuss the library’s plans to transition library services to better serve seniors. Alzheimer’s Disease In September 2008
the Third Age Centre sponsored a very interesting and educational presentation
by Dr. William Reichman, CEO of Baycrest Centre, Toronto.
Many of those in attendance have requested an opportunity to hear him
speak again so we have invited him to come back and he said “yes”.
Dr.Reichman is an internationally renowned expert in geriatric mental
health and dementia, and is the Director of the Baycrest Center which
is focused on aging, brain functioning and mental health and which is
affiliated with the University of Toronto Medical School. He will be
with us on Thursday, September 10 at 2 pm. This time
he will talk about “Causes of Alzheimer’s Disease”. We will be meeting in the K.C. Irving auditorium of the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Complex on upper Regent Street, across from the main entrance to the Regent Street Mall. Admission will be $5 for members, $10 for non-members. Day of Older Persons Breakfast On Thursday, October 1st, the Third Age Centre will sponsor it’s annual breakfast in recognition of the International Day of Older Persons. Marg Routledge, cookbook author and specialty chef, will once again cook breakfast for us, and Gerry Cook, our morningside pianist, will enliven the coffee. Later the recipients of the 2009 George Wakeling Award and the 2009 Logue Memorial Award will be honoured. Come at 8:00 am for coffee/tea and to enjoy piano music with Gerry Cook. The Changes That Come About As We Age We all plan things but things don’t always come out as planned, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. On Thursday, October 22nd, the Third Age Centre will sponsor a panel discussion that will examine some of the transitions in life at retirement and after, both planned and unplanned, fiscal and physical. The panel members, moderated by Tim Andrew, will be Rev. Dr. Peter Short, Genevieve Laloux, and Dr. Rosemary Clews. Time will be provided for questions and discussion with the audience. Cohousing Imagine living in a small community of individually owned housing units, arranged around a common open area or courtyard, with a common house or community centre. Recreate an old-fashioned neighbourhood that supports friendly co-operation, socialization, and mutual support. You’re imagining senior cohousing, a new “old idea” for new seniors. On Thursday, November 26th the Third Age Centre will sponsor a presentation that explores this community approach to independent living. During the first half of “Senior Cohousing” Jo-Ann Fellows, Third Age Centre Board Member, will provide an overview of cohousing, incorporating films of five international examples. The second half of the program will be presented by Yvon Thibodeau, Manager, Residential Development, Atlantic Peoples Housing, Co-Op Atlantic.
