Research Team William
Randall, EdD Dr. Randall is
responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, including liaison
with Principal Investigators of the various components and with the
Swedish and Icelandic sites. He also has supervisory responsibility
for hiring and training of student researchers, grant applications,
data analysis, and writing reports and articles for all components of
the study. As Assistant Professor of Gerontology at St. Thomas University,
Dr. Randall brings a broad understanding of the field of aging. Dr. Stephen Griew Dr. Griew, Emeritus
Professor and Senior Scholar of York University, Toronto, is an adjunct
professor of gerontology at St. Thomas University. He has worked in
the area of health and aging for many years, having served as Chair
of the Department of Behavioural Science at the University of Toronto
Medical School, and Director of the Institute for Behavioural Research
in Health at Curtin University in Australia. He has acted as consultant
on problems for aging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development, and is a recipient of the Kenneth Craik Research Award
of St. John's College, University of Cambridge. Baukje
Miedema, PhD Dr. Miedema is responsible for supervising the collection and analysis of data generated by the Social interviews. As a Lecturer with Dalhousie University, Department of Family Medicine, based at the Family Medicine Teaching Unit in Fredericton, Dr. Miedema provides a valuable link between the social and medical components of the 80+ Study. She has also extensive experience with large data sets, using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies in her numerous projects.
Dr. Higgins is Associate Professor of Psychology at St. Thomas University, with expertise in social/personality psychology. Her main research interests are in understanding the impact of psychological variables (such as optimism) on health, and attributional styles in person perception. She has primary responsibility for planning and implementing the psychology component, for overseeing the psychology interviews, and for preparing articles on the results of the psychological data.
Dr. Prior is Associate Professor of Psychology at St. Thomas with a background in language acquisition and a special interest in gender studies, narrative psychology, and qualitative research. She has primary responsibility for planning and implementing the biographical component, developing protocol questions, conducting interviews; analysing transcripts, and comparing this data with quantitative information from other components of the study.
Dr. Middleton is a specialist in geriatric medicine and has over 25 years experience working with older people. She trained in Oxford England and worked as a consultant at St. Mary's Hospital in London before coming to Canada in 1999. She held an honourary lecturer appointment with the University of London and has a similar appointment with Dalhousie. She is involved in the planning and analysis of the health component of the study.
Ms Skarborn is directly responsible for all day-to-day operations of the Study, including scheduling interviews with participants, maintaining accurate records of all activities related to the research, and supporting the Project Director and Principal Investigators in all aspects of the Study. She has been instrumental in planning and implementing the biographical component of the Study and in helping to conduct and analyse the lifestory interviews.
Dr. Svensson is Principal Researcher at the Gerontology Research Center, Lund, Sweden, and Adjunct Professor at St. Thomas University. He is designer and director of the Lund 80+ Study and International Coordinator for the Study as a whole. His areas of expertise are research design and methodology, aging and environment, and cognitive aging. His responsibilities in relation to the Fredericton 80+ Study involve general consulting with the research team, cooperation in data analysis, and publication of results from the study. |
