2. Narrow Your Topic
begin reading in a general way (texts, encyclopedias) to get an overview
-- select an aspect of the topic that has a serious purpose requiring analysis
of the issue, argues from a position, explains complex details
3. Collect Information
do research and make notes, but also think, and jot down your own ideas
(try the note card system, keep a research journal)
4. Develop a Thesis
to specify the point of the paper
to control and focus the paper
5. Organize the Paper:
outline a short introduction, followed by the thesis. statement
set down the main points you will be making in support of this thesis
record supporting details for main points
jot down what you expect to conclude after making these points
6. Write the first Draft
double or triple space to leave room for revisions
write quickly to get your ideas down
set aside and ponder
7. Revise, Revise, Revise!
plan to rewrite several times
is your paper readable? Does it make sense?
is the thesis clear? Does each paragraph make a separate point? Does the
conclusion follow logically from the points presented? cohesion, logic.
Do the points follow in a logical sequence?
does each paragraph have a topic sentence, and make a separate point?
are transitions between sentences/paragraphs smooth?
check grammar, spelling, typing errors before handing the paper in.
